Sellé ... new facts (Stephen Willis) |
The Greyhound Hotel, where Sellé died was a leading hostelry in Richmond, which competed with the Castle, the Red Lion and the Talbot in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was established in 1685 as a posting inn in the middle of George Street, just west of Church Court. The fine porch of the door at the end of the long central entrance passageway still exists, but the building is now all shops and offices.
Henry Sellé
was the organist of St Ann’s, Kew (Mason’s Dircetory of Richmond etc. 1853,
kept at Twickenham Local Studies Library).
Barkas’s Richmond Notes, vol.5 contains a cutting which states that “[Dr
Sellé’s] brother, H. Sellé, was organist at Kew Church from 1845 to 1884.”
Huthcings & Crowsay’s Directory of Richmond, Kew, Twickenham etc.1886 lists Guarnerius Sellé living at Southcote Cottage, Richmond Road, as well as listing his father and uncle.
A letter from the Royal
Archives, referring to the marriage of Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge in
1866 includes the following:
‘a newspaper cutting states that Mr Sellé, the organist, Dr Sellé, the
Princess’s former tutor, and the choir all occupied the organ loft during the
ceremony.’
